Fashion Prada Designs Costumes For The Great Gatsby Movie

Radzimir dress with pearl and crystal details and cut-away hem from Prada

I have been highly anticipating the release of The Great Gatsby movie starring Carey Mulligan and Leonardo di Caprio for a year now. The Great Gatsby is one of my absolute favorite books and I have wanted to see whether this movie version would be faithful to the book or if it will be just as chic as the first movie version starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway. I’ve seen the trailer several times and it’s all very hyped up, glitzy and glamorous. It’s supposed to be in 3D (I don’t know why they had to render it that way), so I wonder what dimension this will lend to the story.

Baz Luhrmann is the director of the film and he worked with Miuccia Prada for the costumes, about 40 of them from Prada and Miu Miu. Luhrmann and Miuccia also collaborated on last year’s Schiaparelli and Prada Impossible Conversations Costume Institute exhibit at The Met. The clothes, some inspired by past collections from Prada and Miu Miu, echo the drop-waist flapper look. But instead of the clothes looking too much like costumes from that period, Prada, ever brilliant, found ways to make them modern through the mix of materials and slight modifications to the silhouettes.

Luhrmann and Prada also worked together on di Caprio’s clothes for the 1996 Romeo + Juliet movie.

I can’t wait to see all the costumes of di Caprio in the movie and compare them to the rich and handsome clothes of Redford made by Ralph Lauren in the original film.

I’d love to be wearing the simple Miu Miu shift for Spring! The design, even though it’s been done for a period film, never looks dated.

I love this book too since reading it from HighSchool, and I totally expect the same way you do. But the most I anticipated are the costumes that they will be wearing, and it can never go wrong if the creator are Prada family.
