Is there a more apropos color for this festive season than gold? When I think of gold I think of the crowns of The Three Kings and I imagine their gifts to the newborn Jesus would have been wrapped in some gold paper or boxes or ornate bottles. I think of King Midas and how everything he touched turned to gold. I think of classic gold Rolex watches and Mrs John L Strong stationery with gold embossed motifs, and Chanel No. 5, which is often referred to as “liquid gold.”
I think of gold and I think of glamour and the high life. The foil top of Veuve Clicquot, the Gold restaurant of Dolce & Gabbana in Milan, a dreamy and floaty Oscar de la Renta ballgown covered with gold paillettes. I think of rooms with gold leaf ceilings or French antique Louis XV furniture or something wildly extravagant and ostentatious like a Russian czar’s palace or collection of Faberge eggs. I think of ornate Rococo frames housing Impressionist masterpieces, lacquered screen panels with hand-painted chinoiserie scenery, and embroidered monograms on velvet pillows. I think of the golden shimmery hues of a Gustav Klimt canvas and the lushness of gold brocade curtains.
“Gold is such a beautiful accent. It’s like jewelry—it can be both refined and glamorous,” once said the decorator Suzanne Kasler.
